Fast facts

  • When basketball was first played the objective of the game was to throw the basketball into fruit baskets. Every time a point was scored, the game was stopped so that a ladder could be brought out to retrieve the ball.
  • Basketball made its debut at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games and has not featured on a program again until GC2018.
  • Men and women play with different sized basketballs. During competition, women will play with a size 6 basketball and the men a size 7.
