Mau Power, Moreton and Aquila Young
Driven by a passion for storytelling and inspired by the culture of hip hop, Mau Power is the first rapper to emerge out of the Torres Strait and break out on the Australian music scene.
For many years Mau Power has been guided by two cultures: Indigenous culture and hip hop. Hailing from Thursday Island, he is a proud Dhoebaw man of the Guda Maluilgal nations.
Take a spiritual journey through the pinnacles of Mau Power's life and culture as he performs music from his autobiographical album, 'The Show Will Go On.' The set list will get you moving with a widely acclaimed remake of 'Island Home' and the inspirational anthem, 'Freedom' (a collaboration with Archie Roach).
"Mau Powers soulful, lyrical storytelling sent goosebumps down the audiences spines. The performance as a whole was nothing but extraordinary.” The Music.
Take a tour of the musicians that are the heart of our city, including mysterious multi-instrumentalist and chanteuse Aquila Young and Moreton.
Intrepid, gritty and dynamic; three-piece indie rock outfit, Moreton, has rapidly established itself as a truly unique voice in Australian music. Moreton, fronted by Georgia Potter, launched onto the scene in 2016 with their captivating debut single 'The Water'. Soon after, the band released their debut EP to critical acclaim, showcased at BIGSOUND and played to packed out venues on their east coast tour.
In 2017 Moreton supported James Vincent McMorrow on his Australian tour. Drawing comparisons with the likes of The Drones and PJ Harvey, Moreton delivers earnest lyrics, stirring vocals, minimalist rhythm and reverb-drenched, hook-laden guitar melodies.
"Masterfully melts hope and despair into single sentences, punching through the feet-dragged composition with lingering one-liners." Rolling Stone, Australia.
"An utterly sublime, evocative, yet wholly tranquil experience; more a meandering, delayed sense of gratification than direct and instant relief and all the more a pleasure to listen to for it." The Music.
With songs swept up in rolling drums; lush, swelling guitars and deeply resonant vocals, the sounds of the songstress emanate a brooding core of surreal and dreamlike capacity. An echo of time, from the past into the present, travelling deep into the unknown.
Mau Power: 9.30pm - 10.30pm
