Gaurii | Wagana Dancers (AUS)
See Aboriginal creation stories come to life through a delightful mix of dance, music, puppetry and text.
Gaurii (noun): feather (Wiradjuri language).
You'll meet Wagan the Crow, Dinnawan the Emu, Mugi the Owl, Wirijiiribin the Lyrebird and Girrawi the Cockatoo. Throughout the performance your children will have the chance to learn dances, experience ochres and play with the puppets. Gaurii will get you thinking about the richness of Aboriginal culture, and our shared responsibility for caring for country and each other.
This show is perfect for families.
About the creators:
Under the direction of Wiradjuri choreographer and dancer Jo Clancy, the Wagana Dancers perform traditional and contemporary Aboriginal dances inspired by the magnificent country of the Blue Mountains and NSW Central West. The dancers honour and respect the Darug, Gundungurra and Wiradjuri peoples as the traditional custodians of the lands they create and live on.
Wagana has a strong youth focus and they make work with and for children and young people. Wagana performs at festivals and events and in schools and pre-schools. The company has represented Australia at the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival in Scotland, Dance and the Child International in Denmark, the Honolulu Festival in Hawaii and the World Indigenous People's Conference on Education in Canada.
