The Republic of Mauritius, lying off the southeast coast of Africa and east of Madagascar, joined the Commonwealth in 1968 and formed a National Olympic Committee in 1972.
This island country in the Indian Ocean made its debut at the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games but had to wait until the Kuala Lumpur 1998 Commonwealth Games to win its first medals – all in boxing. Medal success followed at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games with three silver medals – two of which were also won in boxing. The other was won on the athletics track. Mauritius won a silver and a bronze medal at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Mauritius National Olympic Committee is responsible for the island’s participation in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
