The Cooperative Republic of Guyana lies in the northeast of South America and borders Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela.
Despite not joining the Commonwealth until 1966, Guyana has attended 17 Commonwealth Games since the Hamilton 1930 Commonwealth Games. It has achieved gold, silver and bronze medal success including gold on the athletics track at the London 1934 Commonwealth Games and gold in the boxing ring at the Edmonton 1978 Commonwealth Games.
Aliann Pompey continued Guyana’s success in athletics, finishing second in the women’s 400m sprint at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. Twenty-eight athletes represented Guyana at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in cycling, boxing, table tennis, squash, shooting, swimming and athletics.
