This landlocked plateau in southern Africa has achieved silver and bronze medal success, notably in athletics and boxing, but it was on the athletics track at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games that Botswana won its first gold medal as Amantle Montsho ran the women’s 400m in 50.10 seconds to take first place. Botswana’s Nijel Amos won a gold medal in athletics at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The triumphant athlete was the flag bearer for Botswana in the Opening Ceremony of the Games and he was Botswana’s first athlete to win an Olympic medal, gaining a silver medal in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:41:73 at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
