Wrestling legend is ‘goalkeeper of GC2018 competition’
As the appointed Wrestling Technical Delegate for GC2018, Daniel Robin has his hands full.
But what better hands to be in.
Daniel won the wrestling World Championship for France 50 years ago and is a silver medallist at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling – a massive feat in itself.
A true legend to the sport, he was also a former rugby player for Grenoble in France.
So what role does a Technical Delegate play at the Games?
"You could say I am the goalkeeper of the rules of the competition," Robin told GC2018.
"My mission is to help the organising committee to organise the competition in the best environment and in respect to the rules of the International Federation which is United World Wrestling."
Sitting down with a number of GOLDOC Functional Areas including, Look and Signage and Sport as well as touring the newly opened Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre, Daniel is a key player in bringing a successful wrestling competition to life.
And he says, success will not happen without the ambience of a full stadium.
"What we are looking for is having a friendly Games and having a successful event in the spirit of the Games. And the crowd is part of the success."
With six different weight categories for men and women, spectators will witness a sport full of technique, balance and strength.
"Wrestling is very chevaleresque (French for chevalier/chivalrous) as it is a combat sport with some elegance," Robin said.
"There are so many different styles of wrestling that you have some unexpected actions.
"Some get funny, some get surprising and some you know are beautiful displaying different expression.
"The crowd are fixed on the two people on the mat, so it’s a big concentration but if at the same time the crowd enjoy the spectacle, enjoy the show and enjoy the ambience, it will give them something else each time as each bout is different.
"That’s what is so special about wrestling."
