Walsh smashes shot put record before final

9 Apr 2018

New Zealand’s Tom Walsh smashed the shot put Games Record in qualifying with 22.45m, the longest throw ever recorded in a qualifying round of a major championships.

Walsh’s throw was almost a metre more than the previous record of 21.61m held by Jamaica’s reigning champion O’Dayne Richards who also qualified for the final with 19.65m.

It was a dominant qualifying performance, his throw was 1.79m further than anyone else in the competition, but the Kiwi was in the same position going into the 2014 Glasgow final and missed out on gold.

"Last time I did that (threw a record in qualifying) four years ago, I didn't win the final,” Walsh said.

“So hopefully I don't do anything like that tomorrow.

"I feel really good throwing 22.45m. There are probably 10 guys in the world who have thrown that ever. So I feel pretty good."

Walsh is the reigning world champion and will be hoping to claim his first Commonwealth Games gold medal tonight.
