New era for netball after shock results

12 Apr 2018

Netball has entered uncharted territory at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

In the two decades since the sport was admitted to the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, only two nations, Australia and New Zealand, have contested the gold medal match.

The world's top two ranked netball nations will meet in a semifinal after Australia won its final preliminary match 72-51 against Jamaica on Wednesday 11 April.

The world No.1 Australia Diamonds finished the Pool A preliminaries undefeated in five matches, while New Zealand suffered a shock 53-57 loss to Malawi before being beaten by England 45-54 and needed to rely on goal percentages to get through to the semifinal.

A new gold medal contender will advance to the final on Sunday with England set to clash with Jamaica.

Australia coach Lisa Alexander, who led the team to a world cup win and success four years ago at Glasgow 2014, said the competitive nature of international netball would help grow the sport.

"I'm biased but I think netball is one of the greatest sports you can see (on the world stage)," Alexander said.

"This is sport at the highest level, we've won some fans and we want to spread our sport around the world."
