India shock England in hockey
India women's hockey team has upset world No.2 England 2-1 in their Pool A match on Sunday.
The 2-1 defeat means there could be some anxious moments for England before the tournament semifinalists are decided.
Many of India's players are making their Commonwealth Games debut and are now part of another first for their country.
"This is the first time we beat England, so we are very happy," India's captain Rani said.
"Many in our team have not played against England before, so they all are excited. We deserved to win. It is awesome."
England started well, scoring the first goal in the first minute, courtesy of captain Alexandra Danson, but then failed to convert multiple chances.
India lifted in the second half with goals from Navneet Kaur and then Gurjit Kaur and found inspiration from the efforts of Pradhan, who put her body on the line.
There was more drama in the later women's Pool B match when world No.4 New Zealand drew 0-0 with world No.21 Canada. New Zealand meet Australia on Monday, which will likely decide who tops the pool.
