GC2018 basketball match schedule unveiled

The 16 basketball teams to compete at GC2018 now know who they’ll face in their opening matches in Townsville and Cairns, with the unveiling of the full schedule. 

In the opening game of the men’s competition, England and Scotland have been pitted against each other, playing at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre on Thursday, 5 April 2018. 

On the same day at the Cairns Convention Centre, Jamaica and India will open the women’s competition.  

Day two will see top seed Australia take on fourth seeds Mozambique in Townsville for the women’s competition, and the men’s Australian team will have their first hit-out against games debutants, Canada, in Cairns.

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC believes the schedule will provide spectators with an exciting tournament. 

“For the people of Townsville and Cairns, this represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness world-class basketballers in their own backyard for six consecutive days from 5-10 April,” Mr Beattie said.

“Townsville will witness the top-four seeded women’s teams including the Opals, whilst Cairns has the opportunity to watch the top-four seeding men’s teams, headlined by the Boomers.”

In basketball’s second appearance at a games, event cities Townsville and Cairns will host 12 preliminary matches between 5–9 April, with two matches included in each ticketed session.

Following the preliminary matches, the top two teams from Pool A will proceed to the semi-finals, and the bottom two teams from Pool A will play the top two teams from Pool B in the qualifying finals, to be held in Cairns (men) and Townsville (women) on 10 April. 

The semi-final and medal matches will be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13–15 April.
