Games Chairman shares the facts and figures on GC2018 projects

25 Oct 2016

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC shared GC2018 facts and figures at the Queensland Infrastructure Projects Conference this morning, confirming the Games is well and truly on track with local businesses reaping the rewards.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie said the latest figures indicate that of the $606 million in construction contracts awarded for the venues and Commonwealth Games Village (CGV) projects, $261 million have been awarded to Gold Coast contractors and a further $284 million throughout South East Queensland businesses.

GC2018 is generating consistent and significant benefits to the local community with 214 construction work packages already awarded to Gold Coast businesses and a further 208 work packages awarded to businesses throughout the remainder of South East Queensland.

Mr Beattie said that when a major GC2018 contract or sponsorship is awarded, benefits flow through to the suppliers, subcontractors and jobseekers in the broader economy and that is something we are extremely proud of, auguring well for a long term legacy for the city and state.

South East Queensland businesses have secured 93 of the 99 contracts awarded to date for the CGV Parklands project with 51 of these going directly to Gold Coast businesses.

Mr Beattie said that more than 10,000 workers had played a role in the construction of venues and the CGV with approximately 1,500 employees currently employed across GC2018 related developments.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will generate an economic impact of more than $2 billion and create up to 30,000 full time equivalent jobs.
