England shock Australia in netball thriller
England has won the netball gold medal in its first appearance in a final with a 52-51 victory over Australia at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday.
Goal attack Helen Housby hit the match-winning goal in the last second after the Roses had trailed by as much as four goals early in the final quarter.
The final was the first time Australia had been challenged after entering the tournament finale with an average winning margin of 45 goals.
It was 25-25 at halftime, with goal keeper Geva Mentor doing a fine job on Australia captain and goal shooter Caitlin Bassett.
By early in the third quarter, Mentor, an Australian citizen by residency, had three intercepts and three deflections as England's major ball winner.
More to come.
