Commonwealth Day message
Her Majesty The Queen has paid tribute to GC2018 and it's volunteering program as part of her annual Commonwealth Day address.
Commonwealth Day occurs on the second Monday in March each year with this year’s theme - "Towards a Common Future” - seeking to explore how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens.
As part of The Queen’s address, Her Majesty said:
“The excitement and positive potential of friendly rivalry will be on display next month as we enjoy the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia."
Contributing to the success of the Games, alongside athletes and officials, will be thousands of volunteers.
“Voluntary effort, by people working as individuals, in groups or through larger associations, is so often what shapes the Commonwealth and all our communities.
"By pledging to serve the common good in new ways, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to grow in scope and stature, to have an even greater impact on people’s lives, today, and for future generations.”
Across the 11 days of GC2018, 15,000 volunteers will complete 130,000 shifts which equates to around one million hours of services in total.
